"Playing of Poongmul
is rather enigmatic. People living in the same town may or may not
be of good terms with each other. However, when the Poongmul is
being played, people will unconsciously start smiling where opportunities
are created for reconciliation with each other. People having this
much fun will run into their kitchens to paint their faces with
charcoal, to dress up as women, imitate a hunch back to create an
instant comic scene where jokes and funny gestures are made. That's
why we can stay up all night and enjoy ourselves, otherwise, what
fun would it be just to play the instruments all day long?"
-Soonyong Yang (1941-1995)-
About
Pilbong Gut…
The Name "Pilbong"
originated from the regional settings of the village of Pilbong.
Located in the state of Chun Ra, Im Shil county, Kang Jin township,
the mountain located behind the town looks like the tip of a brush,
hence the name. The people of Pilbong originally had village-wide
"Madang-Barbki" and "Dang-San Gut" ever since they can remember.
However, the tradition that is passed on today was shaped approximately
115 years ago, when the villagers invited Hahksahm Park, neighboring
town's Poongmul leader. Jooho Song, from Pilbong then carried on
the tradition, who, eventually passed it down to Soonyong Yang.
Yang had restored the tradition in 1970s, when people were starting
to lose interest in Poongmul. Since then, he had taught Pilbong
Gut to tens of thousands of people. Pilbong Gut became the Intangible
Cultural asset in 1989, and approximately three thousand students
learn Pilbong Gut per year.
