1st
Annual
Shim Tah Conert
December 9, Sunday, 7pm |
Barnes
Hall Auditorium, Cornell University,
Ithaca, NY |
|
The semester's
winding down to the end, everyone's busy with school, job,
finals, etc etc... so...what better way to release all that
tension then to come and join 1st Annual Shim Tah Conert!!
That's right folks. You heard me right. Cornell Poongmoolpae
is having our OWN, 1st time EVER in its history (which
is only 2.5 yrs by the way..) concert! There'll be singing,
dancing, samulnori, pangut, and much more! (actually.. that's
about it).We are pretty excited over this event because it's
the first time we've ever had something to call our own. And
this is also the only event this semester large enough in
scale to get everyone in our group and the audience involved.
We don't want this to be another "exotic cultural" event where
everyone stares and gawk in wonder, but rather we want to
make it into a part of school tradition, a piece of Korean-American
tradition that we can really build upon. In order to do this,
it would be REALLY awesome if we could get fellow NY
poongmoolians here to either cheer us on or even be a part
of the event!!
I know this is a VERY short notice and I know everyone's busy...
so, if you get a chance, discuss with your group, and get
back to me by saturday via email and I'll send you more detailed
information at that point(directions, agenda, etc).

Benefit
Concert for at Neues
Kabarett include performance by Xtatika
July 21st, 2001, Saturday, 8pm |
|
122 West 27th Street, 10th Floor, New York |
|
$6-10
sliding scale
Neues Kabarett will host a benefit concert to raise funds
for performance facilities at The Brecht Forum's loft.
8:00 - Steve Dalachinsky will read from his recently
released book of poetry, "a superintendent's eyes," and other
work.
8:15 - Okkyung Lee will perform a solo set. A native
of Korea, Lee is a cellist and composer who explores contemporary
classical, free improvisation, noise, Korean folk music, movies
and jazz in order to create her original voice.
9:00 - Xtatika will perform from their newly released
debut album "Tongue Bath" (Tzadik).
Xtatika reveals the unique visions of singer/songwriter Haena
Kim that include traditional Korean Samulnori beats.
Featuring hypnotic vocals, nasty electric bass (Mas Yamagata)
and two driving Korean percussionists (Kyungwook Jung and
Vong Pak), this is a band that opens up an exciting new
world of sound. A magical blend of alternative rock with Korean
traditional music.
"Xtatika will stir up the spirits tonight...A bizarre mix
of Korean percussion, dark moods and leader Haena Kim's vocals...
Tongue Bath hits on enough genuinely odd places to make it
the sort of record that you can't stop listening to...Should
be intense onstage." - Time Out New York
10:00 - The Spunklads are known as "the great lost
punk band from '76." The Spunklads gained an almost instant
legendary status in London. Some critics consider The Spunklads
to be the true fathers of punk, predating the early success
of fellow London punks the Damned, the Sex Pistols and the
Clash -- though their influence and impact upon these bands
is more than just obvious.
"You'll hopefully never get to see Sham or the Pistols. God
forbid another "reunion" tour. On the other hand, we from
the U.K. gave america another run of the Sex Pistols and what
did you give us? KISS. Did these gobshites in clown make-up
ever break up > long enough to make a reunion justifiable?
They're like the clap -- just when you think it's all over,
the burning & itching fucking returns. And hopefully the Clash
will resist the urge to reunite. But The Spunklads, that's
a different story -- you can't reunite if you were never truly
united to begin with." - The Spunklads
