Cross-Roots Summer Program in Korea by NPN

"Annyung haseyo!
We've finally put some of the finishing touches together and are ready to take applications for the NPN CROSS-ROOTS PROGRAM 2002.

Upon approval of your application, we will mail you a more complete itinerary and payment instructions for the trip. The approximate cost of the trip will be 350,000 won (<$300 U.S.) per person + airfare. Money that is not used will be returned to you (as this is a conservative estimate at this point). We will send you payment info. once we approve your application.

As discussed per prior NPN meetings, please clearly indicate which pungmul/cultural organization you are affiliated with, and if you are not affiliated with one, please indicate why you want to attend this program. Once again, we are highly encouraging group participation rather than individuals unaffiliated with a group to attend, and suggest at least 2 people from each group attends, such that the training that is received in Korea can be brought back to your respective group.

Program Description (July 25 - August 13):
Due to feedback from 2000 participants, we have shortened the program to include just two Junsoo training sessions:
Honam Jwado Pilbong Pungmul drumming and Kosung Ogwangdae mask dance. Both of these places were chosen because they have excellent teachers in residence and maintain a meaningful training philosophy. In short, they both know what they are doing. Also, Pilbong drumming is considered as one of the more representative types of Jwado or left-side" regional pungmul from Cholla province, well-known for preserving the village rituals of ìmaul-kut" and emphasizing the feeling of daedong nori or group-play." Kosung Ogwangdae is known for its strength and beauty in dance (as opposed to dialogue). In addition to learning the beautiful kibon or basic dance, you can also learn the dances of the Mundungi (leper), Yangban (aristocrat) or Maldukki (horse groom), Sung (monk), or Kunomi (Big mama).

"Han: Celebrating the Soul of Korea"
Wellesley College
Korean Culture Show

The Korean Culture Show will be held March 30th, 7:30 PM, at Wellesley College's Jewett Auditorium inside Jewett Arts Center.
We are hoping this year's culture show will be different and special from most of the previous and other culture shows. The theme and title of the show this year will be "Han: Celebrating the Soul of Korea," focusing on the distinctly Korean concept that acts as the core of much of Korean culture and its many art forms.

We hope to educate, entertain, and give an opportunity to the Wellesley and general Boston community to experience the art and culture of Korea's han through a variety of both traditional and modern acts. Such acts will include the shaman knife dance (Guhnmo), Sogo Choom (small hand drum dance), traditional mask dance (Tal Choom), and a mix of dance, song and drama reflecting today's modern rendition of han and Korea's rising pop culture.

In addition to this, we will be including a special performance, in collaboration with the Japan Club, to acknowledge and celebrate the upcoming Soccer World Cup 2002. As you may already know, the World Cup games will be co-hosted by Korea and Japan for the first time. This is a hugely significant event by the fact that It symbolizes a major step towards the mending of relations between two countries that have had a long history of conflict. The act will feature a Japanese taiko drummer and a Korean drummer, which should be an interesting performance.

If you need any more info, or have any concerns or questions, please feel free to contact us at any time. Thanks!
