Shaman Ritual: DaeDong Ghoot
 |
"It's
obvious why Kim is a national treasure when you see her perform. She
invokes spirits with remarkable skill."--Los Angeles Times.
Korean shaman Kim Keum-hwa and her 18 master artists and assistants
bless New York City with their spectacular ritual performance. Transforming
an elaborate, vibrang stage into a ceremonial space, Kim Keum-hwa
summons and receives spirits via a series of ritualistic dances, songs,
and acts. Dressed in colorful, sacred costumes, they perform these
rituals--which include offerings of friut and food as well as unnerving
acts of physical courage--to chanting and traditinoal drums and woodwind
instruments played onstage. Established long before Taoism, Buddhism,
or Christianity, these ceremonies are central to Korean culture, embodying
myriad aspects of the country's music and dance traditions. Born in
1931 in North Korea, Kim Keum-hwa is regarded as a "national
living treasure" and one of the most masterful shamans in her
country. Rarely seen outside Korea, this celebration promises to be
one of the most extraordinary cultural experiences of the season.

5th Annual KCON Poongmul Camp

Link to article |
It's
the "Poongmul Time" in the East Coast. Last year, it was
blizzarding cold. Yep we saw the snow fall on our shoulders. Hope
everyone's ready for it again. We'll have various Poongmul rhythm
sessions over 4 days including SulJangGoo rhytms.
(Actual program starts on the 2nd day, Friday though..)
Poongmul Solidarity:
" There are many poongmul groups throughout the U.S. and every
year the number of poongmul groups are increasing. However, the activities
of each group are very isolated and sharing resources are limited
due to poor networking among those groups. KCON believes that solidarities
and strong networking among poongmul groups and individuals are really
needed and now is the time. This year's KCON poongmul camp is organized
to take a small step toward that goal."

- Stepping on the Spirits of the Earth
The Korean
Youth Cultural Center is proud to announce its 15th annual Lunar New
Year Event of 2003 in honor of the 100th Anniversary of Korean American
Immigration: (with participation from KCCEB, Jamaesori, EGO UC Berkeley
pungmulpae and Hwimori Stanford pungmulpae)
Saturday,
February 8th We invite you to show your support and share in the rhythms
at Koryo Plaza in Oakland (Telegraph and 44th St.) at 6 pm
Be there for short performances, refreshments, food, and play- followed
by a madangbalbi, kosa and dwipuri at KYCC.
Background on Jishinbalbki: Jishinbalbki is normally practiced in
Korea and in the Korean American community to gather good wishes for
the New Year. Jishinbalbki is normally performed between the first
15 days (before the first full moon) of the Lunar New Year. Literally,
"stepping on the spirits of the earth," the purpose of the players
dancing in rhythm is to step on, block, and temper the wayward, vengeful
or "bad" tendencies of a spirit and to encourage the good. Since 1988,
KYCC has performed Jishinbalbki in Bay Area "Koreatowns" in order
to 1) to personally recognize Korean merchants who have been struggling
to make a space and wish them a prosperous coming year 2) increase
the visibility of the Korean community and its culture and 3) to nurture
communal awareness, participation and interaction not only between
like-minded Korean groups and organizations but across dividing lines
such as generation, political sensibility, profession and class.

(the adopted-korean kids i'm going to teach drumming to, some korean-american

to have a video on the 100-year anniversary of the immigration of
Koreans to the U.S." - Bosun Kim
