3rd Annual BK Party @ Marcus Garvey Park, NYC
Time to celebrate the fall with the spirit of giving. The Poongmulians from all over the US will perform and serve free food to the community near by.

Celebrating Culture between Communities
BK Party is a day-long festival of traditional Korean drumming and food. The purpose of the event is to provide an opportunity for communities to build relationships and to develop understanding through sharing our rich cultural heritages.
The BK Party has been scheduled during the week of the Korean holiday, Choo-suk . Choo-suk is a day of giving thanks and celebrating the year's harvest. It being a day of celebration among friends and family, Choo-suk is commonly described as the Korean counterpart of Thanksgiving celebrated in the USA. By having the BK Party aligned with the celebrations of Choo-suk we are able to share this joyous holiday with the Korean American and non-Korean community, but perhaps more importantly, the BK Party celebration allows us to draw correlations between a tradition that is thousands of years old and everyday modern life.

Sharing Hearts through Sharing Food
The celebration of Choo-suk in the USA is not a new idea. For the past ten years, the observance of this festive holiday has served as a great way for Koreans in New York and New Jersey to remeber their mother land and to alleviate their homesickness. However, these events were always directed towards the Korean members of these communities. Choo-suk , being more a communal celebration than a personal day of relaxation, serves as a great opportunity for Koreans in the USA to interact with their non-Korean neighbors. The BK Party serves as just such an opportunity. By bringing a traditional Korean holiday that celebrates community, to a non-Korean community we create an opportunity for people of different cultures to share as meal, dialouge, and a day of fun.
In the olden days, Poongmul- a form of percussional Korean folk music–brought people together to feast and let them take enjoyment, to unite together, and to effectively carry out labor or deeds of the community. People of different classes sat down, ate together, celebrated and shared in the process of dissolving any grudges or misunderstandings that may have built up between neighbors throughout the year. The BK Party will be a time for us to spend a whole afternoon filling our tummies with tasty food, playing Poongmul , and hanging out with neighbors on a beautiful Sunday in the sprit of “sharing and being together.”

"There are many poongmul groups throughout the U.S. and every year the number of poongmul groups are increasing. However, the activities of each group are very isolated and sharing resources are limited due to poor networking among those groups. KCON believes that solidarities and strong networking among poongmul groups and individuals are really needed and now is the time. This year's KCON poongmul camp is organized to take a small step toward that goal."

Korean Folk Art Club Performance @ Violence Against Women Awareness Week
“The bitterest tears shed over graves are for words left unsaid and deeds left undone.” - Harriet Beecher Stowe.
Violence Against Women Awareness Week is a very important event. Out of the fifty-two weeks in the year, we have allotted only one week to expose the violence that is perpetrated against women every minute of every day in every part of the world. It behooves us to make our limited time count. Our generation sits upon the edge of revolution. We ask you now to stand upon it. Stand with us and be heard and seen for all those women and girls who cannot. For this week, their fight is ours as well. Korean Folk Art Club sponsors this memorable event by performing their Pangoot on the opening day of the V.A.W.A.W and being part of the International SA Day.

JiShinBalpGhi
Jishin Balpgi, literally meaning "Stepping on the Spirit of the Earth" in Korean, is a traditional folk festival celebrating the beginning of the Lunar New Year in the Korean calendar. This festival symbolizes the ritual cleansing of the village by chasing away bad spirits, ushering in peace and blessings for the new year, while renewing personal ties and fostering a greater sense of community among the villagers.

During the Jishin Balpgi festival, a group of pungmul players (Korean all-in-one drummers/dancers/singers/actors/etc. at play) visit homes wishing residents peace and good fortunes. In return, the hosts offer food and donation used for the betterment of the entire village. In the evening, all the people gather at the madang, or the center of the village, to revel with the first full moon of the lunar new year with food, dance, and games.
